LITTLE ISLAND BIG SEA


   down the rocky slopes run to the shore
   down I sit where many have before
the ocean wide the ancient ancestry
             little island big sea 

                  every moment notched into the bone
                  every notch on every jagged stone
out every window watch the wild waves roll free
                              little island big sea

                 facing up to truth of time and space
                 facing west with a weathered child's face
across the water toward the land of maternity
                              little island big sea

                      taste the tune of timelessness and tide
                   breathe the tune that wells up from inside
the wide seas roar an unheard endless symphony
                                little island big sea 

    this tiny speck of stone beneath my feet
all the faraway stones i'd like to meet
all the oceans that hold them back from me
                     little island big sea
 
             on edges we toss words from distant lands...
and I will read what current flows into my hands
        if the waters bring your bottle home to me

  the waves brush up against the shore all day
  the waves will carry everything away
little things add up to big complexity

              raise our heads to the heavens up on high
  ancient starlight falls and finally meets the eye
a lonely stone …              wind blowing by
